Peanuts Can Help Prevent Allergy Symptoms In Young Children:

 


PARIS: According to a new study released Friday, including peanuts in children's meals early in infancy can help prevent peanut allergies, which can be lethal and afflict swaths of children around the world.

Researchers discovered that exposing neonates and infants to peanut products and gradually increasing their exposure led to better tolerance for the prevalent allergy.

Over the course of two and a half years, 146 peanut-allergic infants aged zero to three were studied in a peer-reviewed study published in The Lancet.

Every day, 96 people in the group were given peanut protein powder, with the dose gradually increasing to the equivalent of six peanuts. The other youngsters were given oat flour as a placebo.

Twenty of the children who got peanut powder experienced allergy remission six months after the treatment ended, meaning they had no allergic reactions.

In the placebo group, one youngster exhibited signs of remission.

The youngsters in remission could tolerate a dose comparable to 16 peanuts six months following treatment.

Twenty more children who got peanut powder were classified as 'desensitized,' indicating they had a larger allergy threshold but were not declared in remission.

Six months after the medication stopped, these children could handle a dose comparable to six to twelve peanuts.

Remission was most common in the study's youngest children, and those under the age of 12 months had the best results.

"Early therapies may offer the best chance of achieving remission," said co-author Stacie Jones.

'A significant load'

According to the report, peanut allergies affect 2% of children in Western countries and can last a lifetime.

Affected children must avoid eating peanuts and have self-injectable adrenaline on hand to prevent fatal allergic shocks if they are mistakenly exposed.

The study's youngest participants had the highest rates of remission, with those under the age of 12 months having the greatest outcomes.

"Very early therapies may provide the best possibility to achieve remission," said Stacie Jones, a co-author of the study.

'An incalculable load'

According to the report, peanut allergies afflict two percent of children in Western countries and can last a lifetime.

Affected children must avoid eating peanuts and have self-injectable adrenaline on hand in order to avoid allergy shocks, which can be fatal if they are exposed accidentally.

When a youngster hugs someone who has just eaten peanuts, they may be exposed.

"There are no therapeutic alternatives," said co-author Wesley Burks, "resulting in a significant load on allergic children and their carers to avoid inadvertent exposure."

"In severe situations, this can limit the liberties of peanut-allergic children, especially when it comes to navigating childcare, schools, and public settings where access to a safe diet is at risk," he noted.

Previous research has yielded similar conclusions, but the length of the most recent study sets it apart.

Although it yielded significant results, it is possible that it does not accurately reflect the behavior of children's bodies in real-world situations.

Adrenaline injections were given to 21 children during the trial, which was conducted under strict medical supervision.
